TONY BENNETT DEBUTED AT CARNEGIE HALL

On June 9th, 1962: Bennett staged a concert performance at Carnegie Hall, using a line-up of musicians including Al Cohn, Kenny Burrell, and Candido, as well as the Ralph Sharon Trio. The concert featured 44 songs, including favorites like “I’ve Got the World on a String and “The Best Is Yet To Come.”


THE PREMIERE OF CLEOPATRA

On June 9th, 1963: The movie, Cleopatra, premiered. The film starred Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Martin Landau.It is one of the most expensive films ever made.


BORN ON THIS DAY: CHARLES WUORINEN

On June 9th, 1938: Composer Charles Wuorinen was born. His electronic, four channel, musical composition, Time’s Encomium, was awarded the 1970 Pulitzer Prize for Music. Wuorinen was the youngest composer ever to win the Pulitzer. The piece is also the first electronic piece to win the prize.
