OPERA FOR THE NOUVEAU RICHE

On October 22, 1883: The original Metropolitan Opera House opened at Broadway and 39th Street; the first performance was Gounod’s Faust. The Met was designed for the “nouveau riche” who had been shut out of the Academy of Music by “Old Money” families. The Academy of Music folded three years after the Met opened.
