On December 31, 1903: Adolph Ochs, owner of The New York Times, held the first ever New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square. After several years of fireworks shows, Adolph made the celebration more grand by constructing a time ball to ring in 1908. Over one hundred years later, shinier and larger incarnations of the ball are used today.
On December 31, 1909: The Manhattan Bridge, that crosses the East River and links Manhattan and Brooklyn, opened to traffic. The bridge was designed by Leon Moisseiff, and is noted for its innovative design.

On December 31, 1977: Donald Trump, Jr., son of real estate mogul Donald Trump and Ivana Trump, was born in New York City. Following in his father’s footsteps as a real estate developer, he currently works alongside his siblings as the Executive Vice President at the Trump Organization.
