THE MAN OF STEAL SET A RECORD
On June 4th, 1988: Former New York Yankee Rickey Henderson stole two bases for a total of 249, breaking the Yankees’ record for stolen bases. The record was even more impressive when considering the fact that Henderson was only a Yankee for four seasons. Derek Jeter would go on to break Henderson’s record, but since he stole over 1,000 bases during his career, he shouldn’t mind too much.
THE NEW YORK TELEPHONE COMPANY WANTED THE 917 AREA CODE
On June 4th, 1990: New York Telephone company announced that it wanted the Bronx area code 917. The telephone company wanted to use the area code for the Bronx and all the cellular phones and paging devices in the 212 area. This was suggested to free up more landlines.
BORN ON THIS DAY: ROBERT MERRILL
On June 4th, 1917: Opera singer Robert Merrill was born. He was a baritone who made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera as winner of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions of the Air in 1945, as Germont in La traviata. In 1996, at a reception at Lincoln Center, Merrill was presented with The Lawrence Tibbett Award from the AGMA Relief Fund, honoring his fifty years of professional achievement and dedication to colleagues.
