On December 10, 1905: O. Henry’s The Gift of the Magi, originally title Gifts of the Magi, was first published in the New York Sunday World. It has been alleged that O. Henry wrote the story in a just a few hours in a booth at Pete’s Tavern at 18th Street and Irving Place.

On December 10, 1906: President Theodore Roosevelt, native of New York City, became the first American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, which he received for his mediation in the Russo-Japanese War.
