THE SHARKS AND THE JETS

On September 26, 1957: The Broadway musical West Side Story opened at the Winter Garden Theatre. It was nominated for and won numerous Tony awards. The musical was written by Arthur Laurents and it was inspired by the classic Shakespearean play, Romeo and Juliet.


GEORGE GERSHWIN

On September 26, 1898: George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn. He was a prolific composer and pianist, and composed many familiar pieces and works, including the classic An American in Paris as well as the opera Porgy and Bess.
