A TRANSIT LAST
On April 6, 1957: Trolley service for public transportation ended in New York City. Trollies were introduced in the 1920s, but ultimately got in the way of automobiles, leading to their eventual discontinuation.
On April 6, 1945: Temple Emanu-El — the first Reform Jewish congregation in the United States — formed when a group of German immigrants met at a Lower East Side home. Located on Fifth Avenue, the congregation now meets in the largest, and some say the most beautiful, synagogue in the world.

On April 6, 1937: Actor Billy Dee Williams was born in New York City. Many recognize Williams from his role as Lando Calrissian in the films Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.
