EMPIRE STATE OF MIND
On May 1, 1931: The Empire State Building opened. At the time, it was the world’s tallest building, and held that title for some 40 years until being surpassed by the North Tower of the original World Trade Center. Both a New York City and U.S. icon, the Empire State Building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986 and is featured prominently throughout popular culture, like in the classic film (and its remake) King Kong.
BABE’S RUTH FIRST HOME RUN AS YANKEE
On May 1, 1920: New York Yankee, Babe Ruth hit his first home run. The ball was hit completely out of the Polo Grounds, a feat that is believed to only have been accomplished by Ruth and by Joe Jackson.
