On June 11, 1944: Trinity Chapel on West 25th Street was formally consecrated as the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava. Being the country’s first Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, St. Sava quickly became a spiritual center for Serbian people and other Orthodox observers on the East Coast.
DAVID B. STEINMAN
On June 11, 1886: Structural engineer and author David Steinman was born. Best known for his lengthy, international bridge-building career, Steinman was in charge of the development and planning of Michigan’s Mackinac Bridge, that being his crowning accomplishment. His firm, Robinson & Steinman, was responsible for the major 1948 renovation of the Brooklyn Bridge.
ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER CLOSED
On June 11, 1966: After 280 performances, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever closed at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. The musical, directed by Robert Lewis and starring Barbara Harris, received three Tony Award nominations. In 2011, a revival version of the production ran on Broadway.
