On November 14, 1964: Hip hop artist and practicing minister Joseph Simmons, also known as Rev Run, was born in Hollis, Queens. Aside from his popularity within the music realm through his group Run-D.M.C., Simmons found national fame starring in the MTV series Run’s House.
AROUND THE WORLD IN 72 DAYS
On November 14, 1889: New York World journalist Nellie Bly boarded the Augusta Victoria steamship, beginning her attempt to travel around the world in less than 80 days, after being inspired by Jules Verne’s character Phileas Fogg. However, she beat the benchmark of 80 days and returned 72 days later in January.
RIDING THE 4th AVE RAILS
On November 14, 1832: The first street railway debuted in New York City. It used horse-drawn cars with metal wheels that ran on a metal track. The route was on 4th Avenue (what’s now Park Avenue) between Prince and 14th Street, and it cost passengers 12 cents.
