On October 6, 1986: Actress Olivia Thirlby was born in the heart of New York City. She is best known for her role as Leah in the Oscar-winning film Juno and for her role as Natalie in the 2011 film The Darkest Hour.



On October 6, 1974: The Broadway musical Mack & Mabel opened at the Majestic Theatre. The musical, starring Bernadette Peters and Robert Preston, received eight Tony nominations. Unfortunately, the musical ran for less than two months.



On October 6, 2008: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed below 10,000 points for the first time since 2003, with stocks plunging close to 800 points. The crash occurred as investors came to realize that the $700 billion U.S. bank bailout would not be a solution for the financial crisis.
