March 1, 1912: Isabella Goodwin was appointed as the first female first grade detective in the New York City Police Department. Her salary was a whopping $2,250 a year.

On March 1, 1880: The IRT Second Avenue Line, also known as the Second Avenue El, which was an elevated railway opened from South Street to 65th Street. Part of the Second Avenue El closed in 1940, and the rest of the line closed two years later.
