On January 24, 1941: Singer-songwriter Neil Diamond was born in Brooklyn. He has sold over 25 million records worldwide, making him one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time. Diamond’s songs have been covered by many, and he continues to release new material and perform on tour.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG

On January 24, 1986: Actress and New York native, Whoopi Goldberg was awarded “Best Actress in a Motion Picture” for the film, The Color Purple (1985) at the 43rd annual Golden Globe Awards. She played the lead role as Celie Harrison Johnson and was also nominated and awarded various accolades for her performance.

On January 24, 1961: The Broadway play, The American Dream premiered at the York Playhouse. This one-act play, directed by Edward Albee, was a satire on American family life.
