On July 24, 1969: Actress and singer Jennifer Lopez was born in the Bronx. She began pursuing a career in acting when she landed her first regular high-profile job as a Fly Girl dancer on the sketch comedy show In Living Color. In 1997, Lopez starred in her breakout film role, famously portraying Selena in the biopic of the same name, and became the first Latina actress to earn over $1 million for a role the following year with the film Out of Sight. She then ventured into the music industry with her debut studio album On the 6. She has won countless awards and has sold more than 75 million records worldwide.

On July 24, 1965: Charles Dillon “Casey” Stengel resigned as manager of the New York Mets. Mocking his well-publicized old age when he was hired, he said, “It’s a great honor to be joining the Knickerbockers,” a New York baseball team that had seen its last game around the time of the Civil War. At the time, the Mets were an expansion team with no chance of winning many games; ever-humorous, Stengel often poked fun at his team, saying, “I’ve been in this game a hundred years, but I see new ways to lose I never knew existed before.” Although his Mets finished last in a ten-team league all four years he managed the team, Stengel remained a popular and well-loved figure and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.

On July 24, 2010: Protests were held in NYC for Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the Iranian woman who gained the attention of human rights groups and people across the globe after being convicted of adultery and sentenced to death by stoning. Since 2006, Ashtiani has been imprisoned and under a death sentence in Tabriz for her alleged infidelity. In September 2010, it was announced that Ashtiani’s execution by stoning had been lifted, although she still faces the death penalty and up to 10 years in prison.
