On May 6, 1983: Oscar and Golden Globe Award nominee Gabourey Sidibe was born in Brooklyn. Sidibe came to fame with her highly touted role in the award-winning film Precious opposite Mariah Carey, Paula Patton, Sherri Shepherd, and Mo’Nique. Later, she joined the cast of the wildly popular FX series, American Horror Story: Coven.



On May 6, 1835: The New York Herald, which was in circulation until 1924, published its first edition. New York City’s Herald Square is named in honor of the newspaper, just as Times Square is named for The New York Times.
