FIONA APPLE

On September 13, 1977: Singer-songwriter Fiona Apple was born in Manhattan. She has released several albums and is known for her distinctive husky voice and jazzy, piano-driven music. Apple got her start after giving a mixtape she made to a friend, who was the babysitter for a music publicist, who then passed it along, launching Apple’s career.


SWIZZ BEATZ

On September 13, 1978: Record producer and hip-hop artist Swizz Beatz was born in the Bronx. He is known as one of hip-hop’s greatest producers and has worked with a number of artists, including Kanye West, Pharrell, Pusha T, and Mary J. Blige.


ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, GO!

On September 13, 1970: Runner Gary Muhrcke won the first New York City Marathon, finishing with the time 2:31:38. He was first of only 55 runners to cross the finish line in front of only one hundred spectators. Since then, the event has grown exponentially.
