COMMUNIST TRIAL IN NYC
On December 15, 1948: Alger Hiss, who was accused of being a Soviet spy, was indicted in New York City on two charges of perjury. Hiss was later found guilty of perjury after a second trial, and served more than three years of his five-year prison sentence. He was not convicted of espionage because the statue of limitations for the charge had run out.

On December 15, 1950: The south wing of the Port Authority Bus Terminal, between eighth and ninth Avenues and 40th and 41st Streets, opened. The north wing opened years later in 1979. Port Authority is now the largest bus terminal in the United States in terms of passengers, with New Jersey Transit making up around 70 percent of the terminal’s traffic.
On December 15, 1915: Actor Jeff Chandler was born in Brooklyn. Chandler was best known for his portrayal of Cochise in Broken Arrow, earning Chandler an Academy Award nomination. He later won another Oscar nomination for his role in the 1952 film The Battle at Apache Pass.
