ARE YOU THAT SOMEBODY

On January 16, 1979: The late R&B songstress Aaliyah was born in Brooklyn. Signed to Jive Records at age 12, Aaliyah came to define contemporary R&B and has heavily influenced the genre’s reemergence in 2013-2014. She tragically died in 2001.

 

LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA

On January 16, 1980: Composer, rapper, lyricist, and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda was born in Manhattan. Miranda is most well-known for writing and starring in In The Heights on Broadway.

 

BEFORE THE PARADE PASSES BY

On January 16, 1964: The Broadway musical Hello, Dolly!, directed and choreographed by Gower Champion and produced by David Merrick, opened at the St. James Theatre. The production took home 10 Tony Awards.
