THE FIGHT IN FOREST HILLS FOR THE DAVIS CUP

On August 31, 1959: The final match of the 48th Davis Cup took place at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills. Team USA took on Australia but ultimately lost to the Aussies who claimed victory with a final score of 3-2.

NOT THAT KIND OF GIN

On August 31, 1997: The revival of The Gin Game, a two person, two act play written by D.L. Coburn, closed at the Lyceum Theatre after 145 performances. It had first premiered on the Great White Way in 1977 with great success.

BORN ON THIS DAY: ARTHUR GODFREY

On August 31, 1903: Famed radio and TV personality Arthur Morton Godfrey was born in New York City. Godfrey was the television personality during the 50’s who proudly promoted Chesterfield cigarettes. After his doctor convinced him that his lung cancer originated from smoking, he stopped promoting Chesterfield and turned his attention to being a spokesman for anti-smoking education.
