AMERICAN AIRLINES CRASH
On March 1, 1962: American Airlines Flight 1 crashed into Jamaica Bay shortly after takeoff, and killed 95 people. An investigation determined the cause was a manufacturing defect in the automatic pilot system that led to a mechanical failure.
On March 1, 1969: New York Yankee Mickey Mantle announced his retirement. At the time of his retirement, he was third on the all-time home run list with 536 hits. He was also the Yankees all-time leader in games played until that record was later broken by Derek Jeter in 2011.
On March 1, 2003: A $250,000 Salvador Dali sketch of the Crucifixion was stolen from a display case in the lobby at Rikers Island and replaced with a fake. In June of the same year, it was announced that three Correction Officers and an Assistant Deputy Warden had been arrested and charged. The drawing has not been recovered.
