CAPTAIN SULLY BECAME A HERO
On January 15, 2009: After taking off from LaGuardia, US Airways Flight 1549’s engine failed after being struck by a flight of birds. Captain Chesley Sullenberger managed to bring the plane down safely in the Hudson River and no one was injured. The incident, known as the Miracle on the Hudson, made Caption Sully a national hero.
On January 15, 1963: Singer Lisa Lisa was born Lisa Velez in Manhattan. Lisa Lisa and her band Cult Jam rose to fame in the 1980s. Her club-hit “Can You Feel the Beat” was sampled in Nina Sky’s 2004 hit single “Move Ya Body.”
MANHATTAN TAKES THE STAGE
On January 15, 1948: Make Mine Manhattan opened at the Broadhurst Theatre and ran for over 400 performances. The play focused on all different facets of the great island of Manhattan, acting as a sort of tribute to the City of New York.
