On September 27, 1950: Reigning heavyweight champ Ezzard Charles outpointed his idol, former heavyweight champ Joe Louis, during a match at Yankee Stadium. After his win, Charles was widely recognized as the heavyweight lineal champion.

On September 27, 1889: New York City welcomed its first steel skeleton skyscraper, the whopping 13-story Tower Building at 50 Broadway. The building, designed by architect Bradford Gilbert, was demolished in 1914. Many argue that the Tower Building was NYC’s first skyscraper.
On September 27, 1965: TV and radio host Alexis Stewart, daughter of Martha Stewart, was born in New York City. Stewart co-hosted the Sirius Satellite series Whatever with Alex and Jennifer. She also hosted the show Whatever, Martha on the Fine Living Network in which she poked fun at her mother’s famous television series.
