THE RAMONES

Musicians

Where are they from? The original members of the band met in the middle-class neighborhood of Forest Hills in the borough of Queens. John Cummings and Thomas Erdelyi had both been in a high-school garage band from 1966 to 1967 known as the Tangerine Puppets. They became friends with Douglas Colvin, who had recently moved to the area from Germany and Jeffry Hyman, who was the initial lead singer of the glam rock band Sniper, founded in 1972.

What have they done? The Ramones recorded their debut album, Ramones, in April 1976. Although the album was reviewed favorably, the two singles issued from the album, “Blitzkrieg Bop” and “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend”, failed to chart at all. They would finally reach success on the release of their fourth album, Road to Ruin. The single “I Wanna Be Sedated” became one of the band’s most popular songs.

Why are they icons? The Ramones were pioneers in rock music. They are often credited as being the first punk rock band. Punk rock was characterized by its rejection of the mainstream and the garage band rock that became popular during the time.

Quote: “To me, punk is about being an individual and going against the grain and standing up and saying ‘This is who I am.” – Joey Ramone.
