NEW YORK HARDCORE: Harley Flanagan’s Take

Founder Cro-Mags, Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt

Where is it from? New York Hardcore was born and raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

What’s it done? Born out of the New York Punk Scene and bands like the Ramones, the New York Dolls and The Stimulators, New York Hardcore was a primary influence of Metal and all indie music since its inception.

Why is it an icon? New York Hardcore continues to inspire new generations of musicians and legends from Green Day to Metallica.

Quote: “The line up [of the Cro-Mags] that initially started making waves was around ’84; ’83–’84. I’d been playing music with several bands leading up to that. I was in the Stimulators a late ’70s era punk band when I was a kid and I was in M.O.I a short lived Hardcore band with members of Kraut Doug Holland, Rob Nunzio of Antidote and John Bloodclot of Cro-Mags. I was also a founding member of Murhpy’s Law another NY Hardcore/punk band.”
