There’s something safe about playing a character, but then it’s like, ‘Who am I underneath it all?

-Emmy Rossum

Emmy Rossum is one of Hollywood’s most talented young actresses. She jumped on to the scene when she won the part of Christine Daaé in Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Phantom of the Opera. She used this opportunity to build on her already budding career, and pursued her dream of being a professional singer.

Emmy Rossum’s career as a singer got an early start when she became part of the Children’s Chorus of the Metropolitan Opera at the age of 7. While she was very young, her talent was obvious to those around her. She sang alongside such singers as Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. She eventually dropped out of the Spence School to pursue her dreams full-time, but she would finish her high school education through an online program sponsored by Stanford University.

She made her acting debut in the daytime soap opera, As the World Turns. In 2000, she would portray an Appalachian orphan in Songcatcher. She received a Spirit Award Nomination in 2003. Rossum’s breakthrough would come in 2004 with her turn in the film version of The Phantom of the Opera. Weber personally picked her when she was 16 for the role of Christine Daaé. She earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance.

The Phantom of the Opera

She followed up her Golden Globe nominated performance in Phantom of the Opera with a starring role in the blockbuster The Day After Tomorrow. The film also starred Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal. IN 2006, she would release her first album, Inside Out, and star in the big budge remake Poseidon.

Rossum returned to television in the Showtime series, Shameless. It is an adaptation of a British series of the same name. She plays Fiona Gallagher, the eldest of six children, who has to be the parent to her siblings because their father is an alcoholic, absent father. William H. Macy stars as the father. The series features some provocative material, but Rossum supports these elements of the show.
