What’s she done? Stanwyck was a film and televisions star who had a 60-year long successful career. She worked with acclaimed directors such as Cecil B. DeMille, Fritz Lang, and Frank Capra. She got her start as a stage actress in the late 1920s, made 85 films in 38 years in Hollywood after that, and then turned to television. Her film roles include Stella Dallas and Double Indemnity.

Why is she an icon? She was known for portraying strong willed women and ranks as the 11th greatest female star of all time by the American Film Institute. She was nominated for four Academy Awards, won three Emmys, and one Golden Globe. In 1981, she won an honorary lifetime achievement award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
