ARMOUR is a line of custom crafted accessories created by Harlem-based artist and native New Yorker, Tara Walton. Inspired by the belief that adornment should double as protection, Walton’s work explores the relationship between attraction and repulsion. The pieces reference the idea that jewelry, so often associated with beautification and attraction, can also be a tool for defense. Hence, ARMOUR.

An extension of the artist’s brass sculpture works, Walton’s jewelry draws from her study of mixed media sculpture and various cultural forms of adornment. West African gold work, fetish objects and Elizabethan structured garments inform the aesthetic of her work. Walton hand forges the accessories at Brooklyn Metal Works studio, a shared workspace for metal smiths in Prospect Heights.

Protective armour has never looked so chic.

The black fabric wrapped pieces pictured above are the first manifestation of ARMOUR, serving as pre-production models. The final forms, some of which are pictured below, are created from these models.

The collection’s metal pieces, available in either brass or bronze, are mainly chokers, shoulder armour, breast plates, wrist and thigh shields, rings and earrings.

These pieces made a bold statement, and are not for the faint at heart… or shall we say, the faint at art.
