Stolen is not your average rum. The process for each sip-ably smooth bottle starts in Trinidad — hand blended with Fenugreek, Columbian Coffee, and Madagascan Vanilla — followed by no less than two years aging in ex-bourbon oak barrels. For the final flourish, the rum is passed through smoking American hardwood.
The finished product is reminiscent of a whiskey, yet maintains the sweet nose of a rum, with hints of coffee and smoke, and is, in a word, delicious. Put a smokey twist on your classic bloody mary, or simply enjoy it neat with an orange wedge; the only wrong way to try Stolen is to not try it at all.
Union Pizza Works
If you believe that variety is the spice of life, and you also believe in pizza, then a visit to Union Pizza Works should be in your future. Located in Bushwick, UPW doesn’t just serve delicious, wood-fired pies; the small pizza sizes are great for family-style dining (and for those of us who can never quite decide what type of pizza we’re in the mood for) — so get a few and share with the table.
UPW offers great indoor/outdoor dining with a garage-esque patio and dining room, and while you’re there, be sure to try the spicy olive oil that’s set on each table — it goes perfect with every pizza. And if great pizza in a great setting wasn’t enough incentive already, UPW has live music every Monday night. What else do you need?
Staff Pick: I’m watching…
Pitch Perfect 2
Get ready, aca-ballers — it’s sequel time. With each released trailer, my anticipation for Pitch Perfect 2 has grown exponentially. Having grown up doing choir, marching band, and musical theater, it should come as no surprise to anyone that I’m a huge fan of a film — shot largely on the campus of my alma mater, no less (Geaux Tigers!) — about sassy, showtunes-singing underdogs.
Sure, I’m a bit concerned that Pitch Perfect 2 might fall victim to the all too common “sequel slump,” especially since the first movie managed to be so great with so little fuss; Pitch Perfect never tried too hard. There’s no certainty that Pitch Perfect 2 will survive the pressure and live up to our (read: my) lofty expectations. But one thing is for sure: I’ve yet to have a bad time watching anything involving Anna Kendrick or Rebel Wilson, so consider me ready to get pitch slapped.
