The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

Mockingjay Part 1, the much anticipated next installment of the world-wide hit franchise, The Hunger Games, is now in theaters, and according to most (present company included), it did not disappoint. The star-studded ensemble cast turned in a gripping, solid performance across the board, including lovable Hollywood darlings Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. While Part 1, setting the stage for the finale, is perhaps not as action heavy as its predecessor, fans of the series will likely take it all in stride for the hope of a big pay out in the fourth and final film, set to be released next November.

We’re listening to…

“Paper Crown” by Alec Benjamin

As if composing music in his dorm room isn’t enough of an accomplishment, up and coming singer-songwriter Alec Benjamin also creates animations to go with them. Catchy but not gimmicky with a driving chorus, “Paper Crown” features little more than a piano and Benjamin’s vocals, and well, that’s all it really needs.

Dough Loco

In the spirit of Doughnut Plant, The Donut Pub and Brooklyn’s 7th Avenue Donuts comes Dough Loco, New York’s most recent foray into “homemade” doughnuts. Having traded its tiny Spanish Harlem storefront for new, slightly-less-tiny digs on East 97th Street, Dough Loco and chef Corey Cova boast some truly gourmet (and some would say, adventurous) varieties — like maple miso, pineapple, and raspberry Sriracha. It’s a must-visit if you live in the neighborhood, and worth the hike if you don’t.

I was looking for a place to go for a date that wasn’t the traditional “dinner and a movie” when I came across Barcade in Chelsea, and it was the perfect choice. This place has great beers on tap and the food was delicious — especially the Beer Braised Short Rib Grilled Cheese, which is just as good as it sounds. Most importantly, though, you can’t forget the arcade games. Being there brought me back to my childhood, playing NBA Jams and Ms. Pac-man. This is definitely a great date place, but it’s also just a place to hangout!
