NYC TAXIS STARTED RUNNING

On May 31st, 1907: Taxi cabs started running. After Harry N. Allen was charged five dollars ($123.2 in today’s dollars) for a journey of .75 miles for a horse carriage ride, he started a taxicab service in New York that charged per mile. He imported 65 gasoline-powered cars from France and began the New York Taxicab Company.

RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL ALMOST BECOMES OFFICE SPACE

On May 31st, 1979: Radio City Musical Hall almost became office space. After changes in film distribution made it difficult for Radio City to secure exclusive bookings of films, and because it preferred to show only G-rated movies, business suffered. It was planned to be converted into office space, but it was renovated after a short closure.

BORN ON THIS DAY: BROOKE SHIELDS

On May 31st, 1965: Actress Brooke Shields was born. Shields was a child model, but became a star when she appeared in the controversial film Pretty Baby, where she played a child prostitute. She went on to appear in such films as Blue Lagoon and Endless Love. She also starred in TV shows, including Suddenly Susan, Nip/Tuck, and The 70’sย  Show.
