On October 20, 1988: A man, wired to explosives, killed himself in Harlem at the 125th Street subway station when the device detonated.

On October 20, 1958: Actor Viggo Mortensen was born in New York City. Mortensen played Aragorn in epic film trilogy The Lord of the Rings.
